Do you know the difference between a merry-go-round and a
carousel? The former has only ‘horses’, but the latter has all kinds of animals
and birds. We drove over to Butchart Gardens to walk through an emerging
West-coast Canadian garden, and spent a most memorable ten minutes, all alone,
riding around on an orca, an antelope, and a lynx.
If you are going to visit the most popular national garden
in Canada, then early Spring is the time to do it, or in Victoria’s case, early
March. There are no crowds. There are no bus groups. There is only peace,
gentle green carpets of moss and grass; gentle water flowing; and a snowy cover
of crocuses and daffodils. It is hard to believe that these rolling gardens and
memorable views use to be the Butcharts’ backyard. I cannot imagine looking out
of my kitchen window while washing up and seeing these manicured mile high
cedar hedges or colourful rising rock plants. What a gift this area of the
World must of seen to the Butcharts’ 150 years ago when they moved in!
Walking through the Butcharts’ yard, I challenged the boys
to take a ‘bad’ photo, and sure enough – there are no poor views here:
