Mâlain Diaries 8

Mâlain Diaries 8

Who stood here?
Who crouched on this
  well-trod clay floor,
inside the Montagne’s protective
curl of an arm?

Who stood here?
Who tended fires long before
the Ducs, the Louis’s, the
professors came to claim your bed?

Who stood here, bairns hanging
off of your legs, fear
of hunger, of wind,
of the very fire that could warm,
or burn?

Who stood here looking through
the eye of quantum physics out
to us, to those who walked this hall of
rock and earth after,
out onto her changing view of earth and ville and
valley below?

Who stood here?

Mâlain Diaries 7 - The Sunflower

Mâlain Diaries 7 - The Sunflower

I knew the moment I saw her:
tall, defiant, green
   in a dry
Crack
of hot black asphalt;
that something was different here.

Built of some inner, ancient DNA to survive.
four weeks of drought,
  No water, no rain, just
   38C SUN.

She grows straight to the sun;
never Deigning at the paucity
that surrounds her feet.
Oh no, her stance is unflinching
against the oncoming traffic and
   fumes.

“How is that possible?” they wonder.
But the sunflower does not concern itself
With thoughts of the earth.
   Her focus is to the sky, for high is
where a bright, yellow short life

begins and belongs.

Mâlain Diaries 5 - Dry Heat

Mâlain Diaries 5 - Dry Heat

It’s ten the bells say, but my eyes will not open.
Sluggish, lugubrious steps
Not ‘slow’;
that is too fast for me.   Leeeeentemeeeeent
Lentement.
Lendemain?
The fly happy in his 40C state
dances around my giant
Bulbous grave of a head.
His
   blood
     speeds.
Mine thickens like wet rolled tar in July.
A frog whose heart beat in Winter
Can only beat once.
Must conserve.

Must get through.

Mâlain Diaries 3 - Ode to the Roquefort

Mâlain Diaries 3 - Ode to the Roquefort

Bring me that smelly-feet cheese,
Oh King of Alsatians;
that rarest of creams raised in
damp caves of old.

Thou art a living piece of
pastures’ past
my sweet  wet
stinking
Bishop.

Bring me that pua! Epoisses, Pont
That makes my tongue sit up like a hard on;
that heady-home-grown, fungus-driven
   layers of spread.

Leave thy creamy blue and green
terroir
on my tongue,
thy
   miaw-meaux
Taleggio lover;

And I shall wash thy feet
with the
dry
crisp liquid
of my cask till my
 days’ end.
